Leeds & Liverpool Canal Lock Restrictions
Updated: 16 August 2026
The Leeds & Liverpool Canal remains open for cruising from Skipton, with temporary lock operating hours being introduced to help conserve water. Here’s what the latest Canal & River Trust arrangements mean if you’re holidaying with Blue Otter.
Prolonged dry weather and increased pressure on water resources are once again affecting parts of England’s canal network.
To conserve water while maintaining navigation, the Canal & River Trust has announced restricted operating hours at Gargrave and Bank Newton Locks and at Bingley Five Rise and Three Rise Locks on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal.
For guests joining Blue Otter in Skipton, however, there is an important distinction: the canal itself remains navigable, and the 18-mile pound between Gargrave and Bingley Five Rise Top Lock remains open and is completely lock-free.
What does this mean for a Blue Otter holiday?
Blue Otter’s Skipton base sits within one of the great advantages of this section of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal – an exceptionally long stretch of uninterrupted, lock-free navigation.
Guests can cruise between Gargrave in the west and Bingley Five Rise in the east without passing through a single lock.
That gives you up to 18 miles of canal – or 36 miles of cruising there and back – without being dependent upon lock operating hours.
For a short break in particular, that still provides plenty of opportunity to experience life afloat: cruise through Skipton and the surrounding countryside, stop at waterside villages and pubs, watch the wildlife, moor up for a walk or simply find a quiet spot and enjoy the view.
There is no requirement to spend a Blue Otter holiday racing from one destination to another. In fact, we’d argue that rather misses the point.

Can I still book a canal holiday from Skipton?
Yes.
The restrictions affect when boats can pass through particular locks; they do not prevent cruising from Skipton.
Indeed, Blue Otter’s location means guests have the option of enjoying an entirely lock-free holiday along the 18-mile pound between Gargrave and Bingley Five Rise Top Lock.
For first-time boaters, couples looking for a particularly relaxed break, or guests simply wanting to experience the Yorkshire countryside at canal pace, that can be an attraction in itself.
Those who want to travel farther can still do so, but itineraries will need to take account of the temporary operating hours.
We’ll help you plan your cruise
Canal conditions can change during prolonged periods of dry weather, so we continue to monitor updates from the Canal & River Trust.
Before every Blue Otter departure, we provide guests with the latest navigation information and can talk through the options for their particular length of stay.
Our priority is to make sure guests set off knowing what to expect and can spend their holiday enjoying the canal rather than worrying about their itinerary.
Water conservation is essential to keeping our historic canal network navigable during prolonged dry periods, and sensible restrictions can help make the available water go further.
For us, it is also a timely reminder of what canal holidays do particularly well.
Travel slowly. Explore locally. And enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
