Canal Boat Holidays for Beginners

Your First Narrowboat Adventure Awaits

Learn to cruise a narrowboat on a short-break holiday in Yorkshire with Blue Otter Boats from Skipton. This lock-free canal route is an ideal holiday choice for couples and a perfect canal boat holiday for beginners.

If you’ve always dreamed of a peaceful escape along the waterways but have never been on a canal boat before, you’re in the right place.
At Blue Otter Boats, we specialise in canal boat holidays for beginners — luxurious, easy to handle, and fully equipped for your first narrowboat adventure. Our cruising season runs from mid-March to mid-November. Even in extreme times of drought, such as the summer of 2025, our location in an 18-mile stretch between two lock navivations meant that we were safe to continue cruising and remained open.

You don’t need any previous boating experience. Just a sense of curiosity, a love of slow travel, and a desire to unwind at your own pace.

What to Expect on a Canal Boat Holiday

A narrowboat holiday is all about slowing down and enjoying the simple pleasures of life on the water. Travelling at just 3–4 miles per hour, you’ll glide through peaceful countryside, charming villages, and scenic locks.

You can moor wherever you like — for a walk, a picnic, or a drink in a canalside pub. Each day brings new views, friendly waves from fellow boaters, and the quiet satisfaction of being fully present in the moment. Explore our journal posts for inspiration, advice and tips.

14 tips for canal boat holiday beginners:

General Cruising

  1. You don’t need a licence to steer a canal boat. Full boat-handling tuition is provided as part of our holiday packages. We even go out with you to take you through the first bridges, locks, show you how to moor up and make sure you feel confident within the first two hours. After that, you’ll feel at ease to enjoy your holiday.
  2. Steering basics. Push the tiller right to go left, and left to go right and put the engine in reverse to stop.
  3. Slow motion is the name of the game. There’s a 4mph speed limit on the inland waterways, but basically you’re going too fast if you’re creating too much wash which disturbs wildlife and erodes the banks.
  4. Don’t panic. Just go into neutral, assess the situation and then switch into first gear. Always slow down when you are approaching bridges, locks, bends or junctions.
  5. Don’t rock other boats.  Go into neutral when passing moored canal boats…other boaters will be quick to tell you if you’re going too fast!
  6. Keep to the right. Canal boats travel on the right side of our canals and rivers, so keep to the right when you meet another boat.
  7. Use your horn. To warn canal boats coming towards you when approaching sharp bends and as you enter a tunnel.

Locks and Tunnels

  1. Lock logistics. Always have a someone in command of the tiller when in a lock and make sure the boat is kept forward of the cill (step). Read about lock navigation here.
  2. Close the gates behind you.  Check all paddles and gates are shut after you’ve used a lock, unless you see another boat approaching.
  3. Save on canal water. Always share a lock with other boats if possible to save water and it means you can share the lock operating load too.
  4. Tunnel vision. Switch on your headlight before entering a tunnel, you can even use the navigation lights for extra light and colour. Always follow the traffic lights, and wear hat and waterproof jacket – some of the tunnels can be leaky!
  5. Mooring musts. When mooring up at busy spots, make sure you don’t leave a big gap and never moor opposite winding holes, on bends, near to bridges, on lock landings where the white mushrooms are (unless waiting to lock through). The same goes for  water points (unless filling up).
  6. Tying up. To keep your boat secure, you need to tie it to the bank with a rope from both the front and the back.
  7. Canal whispers. There are no secrets on the canal, you’ll be surprised just how quick news travels.

Start planning your first canal boat holiday with our lock-free route over 3-4 nights. The route takes you through woodland scenery, visiting quaint villages with country pubs, past nature reserves, and historical landmarks such as the National Trust East Riddlesden Hall.
