Celebrating a life that inspired millions to discover the beauty of Britain’s canals

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Prunella Scales — a much-loved actress, and to so many of our guests, a true inspiration for discovering the magic of canal travel.

For decades, Prunella charmed audiences with her wit, warmth, and unmistakable sparkle. Yet it was through Great Canal Journeys, the remarkable television series she filmed with her husband Timothy West, that she opened a new chapter in the story of Britain’s waterways.

A Journey Shared with Millions

Together, they invited viewers aboard their narrowboat to share not just the gentle rhythm of life at 3 miles an hour, but also the deep emotional connection they felt to the canals — to the heritage, the landscapes, and the people along the way. Through their eyes, the waterways became more than a network of locks and towpaths; they became places of memory, love, and rediscovery.

Many of our guests tell us they first fell in love with the idea of a boating holiday after watching Prunella and Timothy cruise the canals — laughing, reminiscing, and sometimes wrestling with a stubborn lock gate, yet always finding joy in the journey. She showed us that adventure doesn’t have to be fast or far away. It lives in the slow swirl of water beneath the bow, in the call of a moorhen at dawn, and in the quiet contentment of a day spent afloat.

A Family Connection That Endures

Their son, Samuel West, often joined them on their canal adventures, adding another layer of warmth and continuity to their journeys. Over time, he too developed a deep affinity for the waterways and a keen love of birdwatching — finding joy in the simple, meditative pleasure of spotting kingfishers, herons, and swans along the towpath. His presence reflected the way these shared experiences can flow naturally through generations, connecting family, memory, and nature.

A Legacy That Flows On

Prunella’s courage and grace, particularly as she continued her travels while living with dementia, touched hearts across the country. Her spirit — curious, kind, and ever resilient — continues to flow through every winding waterway, every laughter-filled lock, and every person who casts off for the first time because of her.

Thank you, Prunella, for reminding us to slow down, to notice the beauty around us, and to see the world differently.

May your journey continue peacefully, wherever the waters lead.
